AIR RAT SHELTERS IN ALICANTE

A unique journey through the history of the city.

Delve into the nooks and crannies of these underground buildings that saved so many lives during the bombings that the city of Alicante suffered during the civil war.

Alicante has more than 90 air raid shelters, some of which can be visited and show the secrets that helped save the lives of a large part of the population at the time.

We offer three routes:

ROUTE 1

Guided tour of the Interpretation Centre and R31 Séneca and R46 Doctor Balmis Shelters.

We will begin the tour at the Civil War Interpretation Centre, where we will visit 3 thematic rooms on a journey into the past to discover what life was like in Alicante during the years of the Civil War; the changes that civil society underwent at the time; the vicissitudes faced by the population; the adventures that many people find themselves in the position of facing during those fateful years... and anecdotes and curiosities of daily life.

We continue with the visit of 2 of the best preserved air raid shelters in Alicante: R31 Seneca just 75 metres from the interpretation centre and R46 Doctor Balmis which is located 400 metres from the previous one and where the visit ends.

The visits will always be accompanied by a guide, you cannot visit them on your own.

The approximate duration of the visit is 2 hours.

This route is the one that is most commonly carried out. Normally at 10:00 and 17:00. (See calendar)

Sometimes this schedule changes because there are group reservations. You can reserve your visit by buying tickets online or by reserving: by WhatsApp, phone or email.

The R46 shelter is not wheelchair accessible.
ROUTE 2

Guided tour of several air raid shelters

We will visit a series of air raid shelters located in various parts of the city, while we discover the stories and anecdotes of the people who had to use them to save their lives.

A tour will be made through the streets of Alicante and during it we will visit between 3 and 4 shelters: General Marvá, Músico Tordera, Palmeretes (Plaza Castellón) and Tabacalera.

The visits will always be accompanied by a guide, you cannot visit them on your own.

ROUTE 3

Guided tour of the Benalúa Sur and Santa Faz Shelters and the Guijarro Pantheon.

We begin the visit at the Benalúa Sur shelter, where we can see the typical construction features of gallery-type shelters at different points. Later, we will travel (each one in his own vehicle) to the shelter in the district of Santa Faz, which is in a very good state of preservation. After visiting this, we will travel to the Villafranqueza neighbourhood to visit the Guijarro pantheon, where the visit ends.

Visits will always be accompanied by a guide; they cannot be visited on your own. Private transport is required. If you do not have transport, check availability of places (transport supplement €10.00).

Observations

To carry out this route, it is essential to have a private vehicle for the journey from Benalúa to Santa Faz and then to the Panteón de los Guijarro. If you do not have a vehicle, check the availability of places (transport supplement €10.00).

This activity is not accessible by wheelchair.
